After a year of being left to his own devices traversing the wilds of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, India, China, and many more, Henry Rollins is spending 2010 doing what he does best:

Talking, and traveling, and talking about traveling!

The 2010 Frequent Flyer Tour has arrived and Henry is embarking on a tour around the world which will take in more than 100 shows.

To commemorate this occasion and whet the collective appetite, we’ve culled some choice clips from Henry’s past speaking tours (see below to listen) and present them here scrubbed up and sanitized (i.e. swear free) for public consumption.

Enjoy these clips and feel free to spread them around on the internet and radio for everyone to hear.

Hailing from the other Portland, recent Kill Rock Stars signees The Thermals brought their Now We Can See tour across the country to SPACE Gallery, with fellow Portland bands The Shaky Hands and Point Juncture, WA in tow. We spoke with singer/guitarist Hutch Harris before the show.

What is something that this Portland should know about your Portland (Oregon).
They’re really similar! Kathy (Foster, bassist) and I lived here for a year 10 years ago – ’97/’98 – and Kathy was actually remarking when we got here that there are a lot of similarities: the culture and the people, both cities are a little weird for sure, but there’s a lot of good art and music and food and they both have really harsh weather. I think that they should be sister cities.

Chriss (Sutherland) has talked about you living with him when you were here before – how did that come about?
Yeah, we lived with all the Cerberus Shoal guys. Kathy and I had another band and we were on this little label that Cerberus Shoal was on too and we met them out in California – because we’re from California – and then toured all the way back with them here. We’d planned to move to Philly and it just fell through and then Caleb (Cerberus Shoal/Big Blood/Fire On Fire) told us on tour that if things don’t work out – we had gotten along with him really well and really we were all about moving away from San Jose and leaving the west coast for a while – he was like “Just come up” and we ended up moving up here from the Summer ’97 to the Spring ’98.

The name of the SPACE blog is Have Faith In Worthless Knowledge. What is your favorite/most useful bit of worthless knowledge?
Mine would all be trivia about bad sitcoms, especially Seinfeld or The Simpsons, really good sitcoms I should say.

Do you like Three’s Company by any chance?
It’s funny, I’m not so familiar with it, my mom wouldn’t let me and my sister watch Three’s Company! It was totally banned in our house. But yeah trivia about television shows is in there taking up space.

How does playing a larger city like Boston or New York compare to coming to a smaller city like Portland – though it’s probably a little different for you because you’ve lived here so you have a lot of connections here.
Yeah, it’s definitely different for us, but it really depends because sometimes you’ll have a big following in a small town. Of course it’s rad when you play New York because there are so many people and the odds of you getting a lot of them out to shows is a lot better. So in smaller towns it just takes a while to bring more people out to your shows, but we had a great time the last time we were here, and we have a lot of friends here.

We played Northhampton last night and it wasn’t that packed like a lot of the shows on this tour have been, but you know we never played there, and it’s not that big, so it just depends. But last night the vibe was really good so it was still really fun. Every city is different for every band.

Have there been any smaller cities on this tour that have surprised you?
Salt Lake was really good, because that’s not somewhere we play all the time. We stopped going there for years just because we didn’t like playing there, then we went back and it was really good, and we played a neat place. But there haven’t been that many small towns.

It’s just such a big country! This tour is 5 weeks and still there’s a lot of stuff in the middle that we miss. We don’t even go to Florida. We could do like a 3 month US tour but who wants to do that? A lot of times people just end up traveling really far from other cities to see you play. Like when we played Omaha and people were from everywhere – from cities all around for hours and hours. You gotta remember that when you’re playing, that some people are like 8 hour round trip to see you play. I always think that you gotta make sure that you play really well, because if i drove 4 hours to see a band and then had to drive 4 hours back, if they weren’t good that would be a bummer! When we play in Europe too people will take the train, seriously forever, and that’s really cool.

In an interview from a while ago you mentioned wanting to tour with Shaky Hands before you’d ever played with them, how’s that working out now that it’s happening?
They’re on Kill Rock Stars and we signed to the label and I really wanted to take out KRS bands. We had tried to tour with them before and for whatever reason it just didn’t work out, but then we really wanted to have an all-Portland tour – there’s so many rad bands in Portland – there’s no reason for us to tour with any bands that aren’t from there! We’re gonna try in the US to just tour with Portland bands because it’s just really fun – everyone knows each other, and that supports the Portland scene too.

What do you miss most about home when you’re on the road?
Girlfriend. That’s what everyone misses, your boyfriend or girlfriend. And then your bed. And my cat – I miss my cat a lot. My cat’s totally rad. Her name is C.C. She already had that name when I got her, after she was kicked out of like four houses. She was called the devil cat by this old couple who found her. They bought this dresser and when they opened the drawer there was this cat! They called the people they got it from but they were like ‘No, we don’t want the cat,’ so they kicked her out of that house and then they just started locking her out and my friends took her in. She must have gotten pregnant like as soon as she was able so my friend’s like “We have kittens, do you want a cat?” We went over to look at the kittens and the cat was just the most amazing – she was so sweet. She acts like a dog, anyone who comes to the door, she comes right up to you. So I said I’ll take her. She’s rad, and insane.

This is the last installment (barring any last minute emails from the remaining artists scheduled to perform tomorrow) in our Dead Of Winter ’09 interview series. It’s no wonder that they’re called Hometown Heroes: Something that stood out in doing these is how much support and collaboration there is in the Portland music scene – and I’m sure that with all of these talented artists involved, we’ll see that in action at the Dead Of Winter ’09. Make sure to check out the show (tomorrow, January 24, 2009) at SPACE to see them all!

Read on for Seymour’s interview, an MP3 from Dead Of Winter ’08, and the full list of these interviews!

Here’s another MP3 from Dead Of Winter ’08: Kelly Nesbitt and Betsy Upham doing a Violeta Parra tune.

How long have you lived in Maine?
We’ve lived in maine our whole lives – Billy (Libby) in Portland and Aren (Erin Sprinkle) first Windham then Portland.

When did you start playing music?
We’ve both been playing music since we’ve been little children. We have been playing together for a few months

Who do you usually perform with?
We play together as Seymour, but Aren also plays solo and sings for Plains. Billy comes from an old pop band called Even All Out and plays solo under the name Why Hello.

Other than SPACE, what is one of your favorite venues in Portland?
The Empire is nice. and smaller ones like The DoorYard.

Who is your favorite Portland musician or group, other than yourself or those you perform with?
Well I, Billy, really love Aren’s group Plains which members of South China and Pat Corrigan are also in. Lady Lamb The Beekeeper is also great.

How are you tackling the challenge of performing this material alone, when you usually perform it with others?
Well for us this is sort of different because it’s kind of a debut for Seymour. Seymour is based around the two of us with a string trio joining in. but for this we are just doing it as a duo minus the strings. We might have some other people join us…who knows…

What are your musical plans for 2009?
2009 is hopefully going to be our year to get out there and start playing a lot and really develop the idea of the band. We at some point would like to find other people to fill out the sound and get some recording done.

Aleric (Vince Nez) seems to be a bit of an enigma, despite being so active in the Portland scene. A friendly person and mega-talented musician who is one of those uniquely versatile players that can sit in with and build off of just about anybody’s music, he gave some of the most expressive and in-depth responses to our 7 questions. Do not miss him tomorrow at the Dead Of Winter show at SPACE!

How long have you lived in Portland?
I’ve lived in Portland for about 5 years. I moved here from Arizona…

When did you start playing music?
I took clarinet and guitar lessons in 4th grade, but didn’t really get into playing music until my sophomore year in high school, thanks to some friends who inspired me to play just by pickin’ it up and doin’ it themselves. When yer best friend just picks up a guitar and writes a respectable song, that’s when it’s time to do the same thing. That, and the teenage hormones, very very inspirational in jump starting the passion to play music.

Who do you perform with normally?
I play with as many people as I can here in Portland. I’ve been jammin’ trombone with Over a Cardboard Sea a lot lately, still pretty new to that instrument but it has been really fun. Ive been asked to guest play by a lot of friends including Andrew Frederick, Ian Paige, Josh Loring, and others. My personal projects are called Freddybear, named after my favorite bear growin up, and Jamsterbation, named for, well i guess its pretty self descriptive. Both projects contain most of the same songs but Freddybear is usually the live performance manifestation and often includes my brohskis John, Jake, and Dave. Jamsterbation is a recording name i have used for about 10 years and contains a large library of sometimes embarrassing, sometimes crappy and sometimes even good recordings. Regardless of the quality, i made sure and put my heart into every recording. This is my main project and the name i relate to as much as my own name, Vince Nez. I have been accused of being clever by giving myself the stage name Vince Nez cuz it could possibly rhyme with pince nez (french for pinched nose, a type of glasses with no ear rests) but i aint that clever.

Other than SPACE, what is one of your favorite venues in Portland?
My favorite venue to visit in Portland is Blue. I can get some meatballs, watch some killer music 4 nights a week and pay donation directly to the musicians. Oh yeah i can drink beer there, mmmm.

Who is your favorite Portland musician or group, other than yourself or those you perform with?
My favorite local music to listen to on CD is Big Blood. My favorite performer to watch is probably Mink Wilde, nobody rocks like Minke Wild.

How are you tackling the challenge of performing this material alone, when you usually perform it with others?
Yeah, i practice most days. If its a cooperative effort I try to get a recording or give a recording in addition to a talked out practice. It makes it easy to practice on your own time.

What are your musical plans for 2009?
In ’09 I plan to get better at reading music, I plan to Jamsterbate as much as possible, hopefully with the recording gear rollin’, I plan on getting better at the instruments I’m jammin’, definitey plan on playin’ music with good friends. Yup, keep readin’, keep writin’, keep playin’, thats the plan. It would be fun to play out a little more, we’ll see how that goes.

Erin Davidson is better known these days as Dilly Dilly, the uke/guitar/everything-playing siren often seen alongside some of the best musicians in town. She’s getting ready to unleash her own album and has been preparing to head out onto the scene on her own. She’ll be performing on her own (and also collaborating a bit, from what I’ve heard) at the Dead Of Winter show tomorrow.

While you’re reading this interview with Erin, check out another MP3 from Dead Of Winter ’08:
an original tune fromChris Teret

How long have you lived in Maine?
I’ve been in Maine for about eighteen of my thirty living years…. with a bit of Florida and New Hampshire mixed in here and there.

When did you start playing music?
I started playing music when I was fourteen. Found my sisters guitar in the basement when I was living with her and she told me I could have it. So I picked up a guitar book and started learning. It was the best fifty cents i’d ever spent.

Who do you perform with normally?
I normally play solo under the guise of dilly dilly. I have a habit of collaborating with our hometown hero Sontiago and I’ve been known to play a saw and bass note or two for Sage Francis along side Alias and Tom Inhaler. I’ve also appeared on many a random album with Radar Tradar, Bully Club, Seekonk, Filkoe, Micah Blue Smaldone, An Evening With…, etc.

Other than SPACE Gallery, what is one of your favorite venues in Portland?
I’m gonna have to say The Big Easy.. those are my boys..

Who is your favorite portland musician or group, other than
yourself or those you normally perform with?
I’m gonna have to go with Sontiago on this one.

How are you tackling the challenge of performing this material alone, when you’re used to more collaboration?
I think just performing my solo stuff live is the challenge I’m tackling here. I’ve been on hiatus and seems the gears are a bit rusty if you know what I mean.

What are your musical plans for 2009?
Hopefully 2009 will be filled with releasing my first full length titled Of Art And Intention and tour Europe and the US with it. TO THE PAIN!

Scott Peterson is a musician who we don’t get to see playing shows very often, so this Saturday is sure to be a treat.

How long have you lived in Maine?
My whole life, brother.

When did you start playing music?
Started writing songs about 10 years ago, on piano.

Who do you perform with normally?
The streets, and the green pastures of the eastern prominade.

Who is your favorite Portland musician or group, other than yourself or those you perform with?
My favorite Portland-area musicians are Chriss, Caleb, Colleen, Tom, and Micah – the infamous Fire on Fire team.

How are you tackling the challenge of performing this material alone, when you usually perform it with others?
I haven’t performed really at all in the last year, so performing at all will be fun. But I got a new guitar in california – a flamenco with a pickup, so that’ll be a kick.

What are your musical plans for 2009?
2009 musical plans are to record a new album with Moses on dobro and Greg Donahue, on the upright.

A legend on her own, Sonya Tomlison (you know her as the best female rapper in Portland, Sontiago), is planning to team up with Jerusha and Jeremy Robinson (South China) for an exciting twist on what you may be expecting from either party at the Dead Of Winter show tomorrow (January 24, 2009) at SPACE. In light of this upcoming collaboration, here are their combined responses to our 7 questions. At the end of the interview, there’s a live MP3 from last year’s Dead Of Winter for you to enjoy!

How long have you lived in Portland (or Maine)?
Sonya Tomlinson: 8.5 years
South China: Jeremy moved to portland in october 2001, Jerusha just after christmas of the same year. We’ve lived in North Waterboro also and just celebrated our one year anniversary of moving to biddeford.

When did you start playing music?
ST: Age 16
SC: Jeremy played trumpet in fifth grade, but started playing bass in bands as a sophomore in high school. Jerusha was first shoved in front of a microphone by her grandmother at age three and performed from then on. Jerusha was in maybe two short-lived bands until moving up to Portland.

Who do you perform with normally?
ST: I perform as Sontiago, but have been performing with Gabe FM and Dilly Dilly as a trio for nearly two years.
SC: We play as South China, we like to back up Guy Capecelatro III, and we also play in The Plains, Brown Bird, and Paper Birds on a regular basis.

Other than SPACE Gallery, what is one of your favorite venues in Portland?
ST: One Longfellow is a great place to see a sit-down act.
SC: Any manifestation of 108 High Street.

Who is your favorite portland musician or group, other than yourself or those you normally perform with?
ST: Sam James is a class act in my opinion.
SC: That is too difficult of a question!

How are you approaching this unique collabortion?
ST: I normally perform with other people, but it’s rare that I’m responsible for anything other than vocals. For my performance with South China I’ll be playing samples off an SP-202, so it feels like a big responsibilty to have to think about timing, and using an “instrument” of sorts. Gives me some insight to what musican/vocalists must go through.
SC: Since approaching hip hop is something we’ve never done before and something that never dawned on us until seeing her perform at the last Dead Of Winter, we didn’t know what to expect. We were nervous about our slow and moody style matching up with Sonya’s high energy. We’ve made a sweet friend, learned a lot from the collaboration, we’ve written our first beats ever for this show and are hungry for more.

What are your musical plans for 2009?
ST: I’m exploring making my own beats, I would love a full collaboration project with Dilly Dilly when she’s done charming the world with her upcoming full-length- but more accurately I’ll be doing a joint project with producer Andrew Gordon from Halifax who works closely with my label, Endemik Music.
SC: We’re making recordings for South China, Plains, Brown Bird, Paper Birds, and Guy Capecelatro III. Jeremy is starting work in earnest on his solo project, Drab Pony. All the bands we’re involved in are playing lots of shows and are planning to do a bit of touring. Jerusha is taking on students for cello, piano, and guitar at our studio in downtown Biddeford.

As promised, here’s a live recording from Dead Of Winter ’08!
Kelly Nesbitt and Betsy Upham doing Patty Griffin’s “Cold As It Gets”.

How long have you lived in Portland (or Maine)?
I grew up in maine, moved to the west coast for a couple years, and when i moved back, came to portland. that was in spring of 2005.

When did you start playing music?
I started playing music as a kid, playing trumpet in school band and playing piano at home. i picked up guitar after my older friend gave me his junker acoustic, i was 16 or 17.

Who do you perform with normally?
Emily Thomas usually plays shows with me, helps arrange the songs, and looks pretty, which is always a crowd pleaser.

Other than SPACE, what is one of your favorite venues in Portland?
Never played at at Strange Maine but i love watching shows there. it is always a little awkward, but what good thing in life isn’t?

Who is your favorite portland musician or group, other than yourself or those you perform with?
Jay Lobley (Cult Maze, Metal Feathers.) Every project that guy touches turns to hip gold.

How are you tackling the challenge of performing this material alone, when you usually perform it with others?
Simplify, not so much the songs as my own expectation of what they are or could be. It feels a little weird to just play a guitar and not be allowed to bury it in some other sound. I worry about the songs falling flat without some greater ‘context’ of sound surrounding them. We’ll see how it goes.

What are your musical plans for 2009?
What are your musical plans for 2009? I haven’t really considered it, to be honest. Maybe try and finally put out some recordings?

Always prompt and alert, Adam Kurtz seemed to answer our questions as soon as they were sent out (really, I hit send, then when I went back to look at my inbox, I had his answers!). Let’s get to know Portland’s premier Russian rock enthusiast before he plays the Dead Of Winter show this Saturday, January 24th at SPACE.

How long have you lived in Portland?
4 years, 3 months, 23 days (as of DoW date)

When did you start playing music?
Since drumming on my mother’s womb (though my twin brother kept dropping the beat during our duets), but technically since piano lessons in 3rd grade. started guitar in 5th grade (playing Beatles songs on my mom’s classical guitar).

Who do you perform with normally?
Under my own name currently, but full rock band soon. Also, I have broken a string or two for Kino Proby.

Other than SPACE Gallery, what is one of your favorite venues in Portland?
I love Slainte for its inconveniently located support pole.

Who is your favorite Portland musician or group, other than yourself or those you normally perform with?
Bryan Bruchman.[aw, shucks, thanks Adam, I think] 2nd to that, I have to say Elijah Ocean since Loverless kicks ass, Please Be Ours is catchy and awesome, and his solo songs get in my head – and won’t leave!

How are you tackling the challenge of performing this material alone, when (if) you usually perform it with others?
Instead of hoping that people will imagine the drums, bass and other back up parts along with me, I have to change how the song is played in MY head first, treat them more as gentle acoustic numbers. It also helps to get some friends to collaborate and sing a little back up.

What are your musical plans for 2009?
I will release an album – either full length or +/- 5 song EP in 2009 – as a follow-up to the critically acclaimed The Devil is Defeated (2008). I will play regularly in Portland, Boston and NYC, and will not cut my hair or shave until i get a sweet record deal!
