This month’s posters are for Dead of Winter and Stand With Haiti. Dead of Winter is a 3 color screen print designed and printed by Kris Johnsen. Stand With Haiti was designed by Sean Wilkinson and is a 2 color screen print, also printed by Kris Johnsen.

During the day, we had a totally wholesome and honestly pretty rad family-friendly Halloween party. Both Dennis and Sam were there to pop balloons and eat candy (oh yeah, and to take photos).

At night, the vibe changed as the grownups got ready for their own party. Read on for the debauchery…
Once again, we set up a photobooth for attendees to strike a pose and show off their costume. Check out the results!

Then, of course, there was the party. Again we had some incredible cover bands: Darien Brahms as The Velvet Underground (way to rock it as both Lou Reed and Nico!), The Rattlesnakes teamed up with David Pence as The Fall, the Portland supergroup The Blood Capsules (members of Cult Maze, Ye, APSL and the Hatreds) as The Cramps and The Misfits, Phantom Buffalo with Crank Sturgeon as DEVO, and BAM BAM Djing. Amazing.

I wonder what will happen next year…

While we kicked off the Live at SPACE MP3 series with a bang with an (inter)national act, it definitely makes sense to follow it up with one of our own great Portland bands. Phantom Buffalo have survived enough changes in names, members, and the local club scene to make anyone’s head spin, but their psychedelic-tinged pop songs seem to just keep getting better. The high quality (320 kbps) MP3 above is a clear indication of that, as it was among the bevy of new songs that the band played at this show just a few months ago. The band plans to include it on an album they will begin work on later this summer.

On December 9th, the band opened for Oxford Collapse (Sub Pop) and The Spinto Band (Park The Van) at SPACE Gallery. Relive the night back at the original post and photo gallery.

Phantom Buffalo are currently finishing up work on their 3rd full length album, Cement Postcard with Owl Colors, due out later this year. On Thursday, March 12th, the band will play with Soul Movement at the Portland Museum of Art as part of our All Access event (celebrating the PMA’s “Backstage Pass” Rock and Roll photography exhibit). Music starts at 7pm and tickets (which include admission to the second half of the event, at SPACE) will be $10.

At yesterday’s Dog Day Afternoons show (there was watermelon once again!) both acts that performed were solo musicians with music (and names) worthy of full bands. Phantom Buffalo’s Tim Burns (The Red F) played a beautiful set to a hushed crowd of friends and fans, huddled on the floor and gathered in the doorway, until for his last song he was joined by the Galen Richmond (Computer At Sea) to add complementary ambient sounds that bring the music up to a (still somewhat) quiet cacophony. Galen began his own set without much delay and had the crowd dancing as he wrestled casio beats, Game Boy beeps, and twisted synth tones from his custom bent array of electonic toys. Despite the lack of a microphone, he managed to sing and it all worked out great in the intimate confines of the SPACE foyer. The show concluded (in quite a timely manner, I must say) with a second collaboration from Computer At Sea and The Red F, this time Tim passed up the guitar to play… a joystick and a Speak ‘n Spell. Did we mention that these shows are free?
