SPACE is pleased to present True West, a play by Sam Shepard directed by Sean Mewshaw. Live performances by Dead Gowns will take place from 6:30p – 7:30p before each showing.

In Sam Shepard’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated dark comedy, a pair of estranged brothers with more in common than they’d like to admit, outlaw Lee and screenwriter Austin, face off on the edge of the desert east of Los Angeles. They blunder into a misguided collaboration that flares into all-out combat pitting instinct against intellect, civilization against barbarism, art against commerce, and golf club against toaster.

True West is a hilarious, bracing evisceration of the toxic masculinity at the heart of the myth of American Maleness, a sardonic look at the corrupt fantasies of Hollywood fame, and a swan song for the sibling bond.

Sean Mewshaw, director of 2017’s hit production Constellations, wades into the blacker depths of comedy he plumbed in 2011’s shocking Killer Joe, and will stage True West in a hyper-detailed 1980’s-era immersive environment custom built for the gallery at SPACE.

Starring Matthew Delamater and Rob Cameron, with Joe Bearor and Moira Driscoll. Original score written and performed live by Dead Gowns. Sound design by Luke Kalloch.

Please note that each performance of True West can accommodate 45 audience members.

Many of our events contain special lighting effects, and occasionally we bring in external teams that produce their own lighting closer to show day. We will always advertise on the doors if strobe lights are in use. If you are sensitive to lighting or sound effects, need additional accommodations for seating, or have further questions, please reach out to info@space538.org or call our offices at 207-828-5600.

Maine-based Dead Gowns creates music in the raw and tender, pulling on folk, garage, and soft rock tendencies.
