The Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance Founder’s Project event and SPACE welcome award-winning poet Janice N. Harrington for a poetry reading and on-stage conversation with MWPA co-founder Lee Sharkey.
 
Harrington’s first book of poems, Even the Hollow My Body Made Is Gone, won the A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize and the Kate Tufts Poetry Award. Her other collections include The Hands of Strangers: Poems from the Nursing Home (Boa Editions, 2011) and Primitive: The Art and Life of Horace H. Pippin (Boa Editions, 2016).
 
Harrington’s children’s books The Chicken Chasing Queen of Lamar County and Going North have won many awards and citations, including a listing among TIME Magazine’s top 10 children’s books.
 
A former public librarian, Harrington now teaches in the creative writing program at the University of Illinois. She has been awarded that a National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship for Poetry and a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Award for emerging women writers. Lee Sharkey’s fifth full-length poetry collection, Walking Backwards, was published Tupelo Press. She is the recipient of the Abraham Sutzkever Centennial Award in Translation, the Maine Arts Commission’s Individual Artist Fellowship in Literary Arts, and the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance’s Distinguished Achievement Award, and is the senior editor of the Beloit Poetry Journal.
