SPACE is pleased to present Spirit Photography, an installation in the window gallery by Andrew Elijah Edwards.

Spirit Photography uses the electric glow of yesterday’s technologies to channel a live feed from the dream realm to pedestrians on Congress Street.

In this video installation, an assemblage of vintage recording devices surrounds an empty chair. Their myriad cameras fix their lenses on the invisible inhabitants of the window gallery while a jungle of cabling connects to a stack of antiquated televisions. These finely tuned devices project the image of small spirits and animated beings alive in the light of the electric signal onto the TVs.

As we watch, spirits enter and exit, coming to sit and express themselves, expanding an imaginative layer of the dream realm into the reality of the viewer. Spirit Photography explores the growing relationship between the evolving technologies that view the world through the light of the moving image and our connection to imaginative realms of the the dreamscape. A world of beings hovers just outside of the visible.

Andrew Elijah Edwards received his MFA in Emergent Digital Practices from the University of Denver in 2014 and has been exhibiting work throughout the country from Santa Fe to Maine. He works at Spindleworks, a non-profit art center in Brunswick Maine for adults with developmental disabilities where he brings a fascination with the electronic landscape to facilitating an environment for animation, video, performance, and immersive installation.
