| 12pm, free, at Congress Square, on the corner of Congress and High St
From the ashes of Cult Maze comes Brenda! This indie rock trio is cut from the classic mold, tipping its hat with equal reverence to Pavement and the Beach Boys, Elvis and the Walkmen. The Portland Phoenix calls them an “ideal no-frills, no-pretension band to have around this summer”.

| 8.1.2008 | Fri | First Friday: Detached Sentiments closing reception |
5-9pm, with music starting at 8pm, free, all ages
Artist Patrick Corrigan is one of SPACE’s favorite local renaissance men, working out of his Bayside studio, Fort Awesome, on a variety of music projects, paintings and mixed media pieces, silk-screened prints, illustrations and hand-painted custom guitar pedals. Much of his work stems from collaborations with other artists, and this show involves Crank Sturgeon, Jenny Gardiner and Garry Bowcott (as the collective Doghaus), Chris Barry and Dave Noyes. With music by Plains, a new project by Pat and Dave and some other friends.

For fans of Mogwai, Hum and Sunny Day Real Estate. SPACE proudly presents the CD Release of “Through Scenic Heights and Days Regrets”, the new album by Portland post-rockers The Baltic Sea. Once considered a side project of local veteran musicians, the band has matured into a full-fledged outifit with deep orchestral atmospheres blanketing an intensity of showmanship that can only come from playing together for seven years. They’re joined by local upstarts the Cambiata and Boston’s The Informati.

| 8.7.2008 | Thurs | In the Window - GC Typhois goes for the WORLD RECORD |
R. Riley Chaisson is GC Typhois, a one-man band from Portland, ME. He will spend the next four days, a total of 60 hours, attempting to break the world record for longest continuously played solo guitar performance, currently held by James Brister of Louisiana (Jan 29, 2006 at 50 hours). Unlike previous performers to attempt this feat of creativity and endurance, GC Typhois will not be playing a string of other people’s songs, instead he will play a continuous mega-piece for the entirety of the performance, a 60 hour-long generative improvisational tour-de-force that will be captured both in audio and video formats. In the window. Cross your fingers, and come by for a listen.

| Doors open at 7pm, starts at 7:30pm, $7, $5 for members, all ages, Buy tickets at http://www.brownpapertickets.com
Harmony Korine’s (Gummo) follows a lonely Michael Jackson impersonator who is invited by a beautiful Marilyn Monroe to a commune populated by other impersonators in the Scottish Highlands. In a parallel story line, the incomparable Werner Herzog plays a Latin American priest who learns his missionary of nuns can literally fly. A hypnotically funny and truly poignant tale of the instability behind fanaticism and the redemption we can hope to find in one another. Original music by Sun City Girls and J Spaceman (Spiritualized, Spaceman 3).

| Doors open at 8pm, starts at 8:30pm, $10, 18+

Surprise Me Mr. Davis is an electro-folk collaboration between singer-songwriter Nathan Moore and members of the contemporary avant-rock trip The Slip. The band heard Moore singing in the shower while on tour, and during a blizzard in 2003 they recorded some tracks while they were snowed in. They’ve since released a record and an ep. The Low Anthem are from Providence and remind us a little of Brown Bird. Which is hard to do. Local looping wunderkind Whitehouse on Trial opens the evening with an ethereal set of his trademark electronic jams.

Doors open at 9pm, starts at 9:30, $6, 18+

Alina Simone brings a folk-oriented sensibility to her songs about ordinary places and strange meetings. Her style brings to mind both Cat Power and PJ Harvey, but it’s her recent project of Russian punk covers that separates her from the pack. Kindred spirit Adam Kurtz (last seen doing a mind-altering guitar solo in the local Russian tribute band, Kino Proby) joins Alina with the release of his new CD, “The Devil is Defeated.” The lineup is completed with the triumphant return of accordion aficionado Matt Rock, former co-proprietor of The Soundpost, fresh off the boat from a year adventuring in Europe.

At Congress Square, on the corner of Congress and High St, starts at 12pm, free, all ages
The Toughcats, a trio from midcoast Maine, play a unique brand of rock n’ roll. Their songs are slow waltzes, banjo-pickers and steel guitar rockers. (They’ve also got some bits of bluegrass, pieces of old flannel, a shred of tobacco or two, and a healthy wallop of moonshine.) The Toughcats play a mean live show. They take the stage and reel off a blistering string of short tunes that leave you breathless.

They play lots of different toys and instruments and often sample objects from around the house. Their music develops organically, with layers of acoustic instruments, old marching drums and gentle, hushed vocals. Their most recent release was mixed by fellow Icelander Jón Birgisson (Sigur Rós) and feature the strings of Amiina. With Providence's Vio/Miré opening.
