Internships

SPACE is seeking three interns for the summer of 2021: A Programming Intern, an Archives Intern, and a Communications Intern

Under the direct supervision of SPACE staff, interns will gain professional experience in a dynamic non-profit arts environment. Through observation, mentoring, and individually designed projects, interns will gain administrative, programming, and communications experience. Interns will have opportunities to work with various staff members on special projects and learn about different aspects of what SPACE does– from our artist studios, to installations & exhibitions, to film & music programming, and archival work in preparation for SPACE’s upcoming 20th anniversary.

SPACE’s intern program is designed to be hands-on and flexible. Our communal, cooperative work environment ensures that creative input and expression are encouraged and necessary.
A commitment of 15 hours/week is preferred. We anticipate all internships to be a mix of both remote work and on-site work during the summer of 2021. All SPACE staff are vaccinated and remain masked in our workplace. We require all interns to be masked as well.

Interns will interface with visiting and local artists, get unlimited access to SPACE events for the duration of their internship, and grow a network of professional mentors. Each intern is paid $1,000, dispersed in two installments over the course of their internship.

Programming Intern:
The Programming Intern supports all aspects of SPACE event programming across disciplines including film, music, community conversations, and visual arts projects.
This includes:
– Working with staff to prep for outdoor events across a variety of locations during the summer of 2021
– Supporting flyering and promotion of events across the Portland peninsula and beyond
– Contributing ideas and feedback to programming brainstorms and ideas
– Supporting staff with the installation of visual arts exhibitions in the gallery and on the building facade
– Staffing gallery hours open to the public as needed

Archives Intern
The Archives Intern directly supports the Archives Manager with both digital and print organization.
This includes:
– Continuing to migrate content from SPACE’s old website to its new one, completing a total inventory of all SPACE events and exhibitions
– Organizing print ephemera and organization in our staff offices. This includes gaining knowledge on paper and art preservation best practices
– Supporting requests to the community for photos and ephemera from past SPACE events, in service of the upcoming 20th anniversary celebration
– Supporting photographic documentation of ephemera

Communications Intern
The Communications Intern directly supports the Communications Coordinator with communications work across the website, social media, and weekly newsletter.
This includes:
– Supporting development of alt text across platforms for greater accessibility
– Building web pages for upcoming events
– Contributing ideas and feedback to communications ideas and strategies
– Supporting organizational work for digital events on zoom

Schedule:
We are hoping that interns can begin the week of June 14th and work 15 hours a week through August 31st. General availability of Wednesdays through Saturdays is preferred, though we are happy to be flexible around your school and/or work schedule.

All interested applicants should send a cover letter describing their interest and relevant experience, resume, and three(3) references to: jobs@space538.org by June 11. Please include “Summer 2021 Intern” in the subject line. Acceptable file formats are: .doc, .docx, .pdf.
