We Read Banned Books

In observation of Banned Books Week, SPACE Gallery is teaming up with the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine, The Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, and The Portland Public Library to invite Maine authors to read passages from some of their favorite material that's been banned in various parts of the United States.

Featuring Charlotte Agell, Sarah Braunstein, Susan T. Landry, Gibson Fay-Leblanc, Elizabeth Peavey, Martin Steingesser and Pat Taub.

Banned Books Week was launched by the American Library Association in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982. For more information on Banned Books Week, click here. According to the ALA, there were 464 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2012, and many more go unreported.
