Michael Hurley with Chris Weisman
8:00PM
2015 marked 50 years since Michael Hurley released his first record on Folkways Records, First Songs, recorded on the same reel-to-reel that taped Lead Belly’s Last Sessions. In the time since, he’s released albums on Warner Brothers and Rounder, collaborated with the Holy Modal Rounders, published comics, and had his music covered by Cat Power, Violent Femmes, Deer Tick, Vetiver, and Yo La Tengo. At 74 years old, Michael is still as active as ever, playing regularly in his home of Portland, Oregon, touring internationally, and releasing new and archival material through Mississippi Records.
Michael will be joined by enigmatic Brattleboro songsmith, Chris Weisman, making an all-too-rare live appearance. His latest record on NNA Tapes, The Holy Life That’s Coming blends the immediacy of the classic records of the 60’s with the peculiar allure of a lo-fi masterwork. Weisman’s musical dreamworld is deeply entrenched in his unabashed love of all things Lennon/McCartney, as well as his extensive music theory and jazz studies. He imbues his stream-of-consciousness folk songs with a structural complexity that never strays too far from a melody’s core, a sense of familiarity, or the distinctive stamp of all things Weisman.
