FOUR BANDS. FIVE COUNTRIES. TEN WOMEN.
Since its days dressed up in white lab coats in university basements, electronic music has been a largely male-dominated field. The Paris-based Lentonia Records aims to change that and has sent three female electronic acts stateside to shake things up. From France, Emmanuelle de Héricourt, aka EDH, crafts her genre-bending dance tracks from off-kilter drumming, prepared guitars and her unmistakable deep voice, bringing to mind the dark sonic netherworlds of Kraftwerk and DMX Krew. Camilla Sparksss, the fantasy alter-ego of Barbara Lehnhoff (of Swiss/Canadian art punk band Peter Kernel), produces lives shows of pure, unbridled intensity replete with choreography that’s more Pussy Riot than Swan Lake. Alex June, the Chilliean princess of galactic pop, weaves a dark-pink dramatic world, with flurries of synths, bubbling beats and soaring vocals. From Portland, Maine, USA, ‘girlcore’ starlets, Babe, bring the fun, the feisty and the furry in the way that only they can.
