Les Sorciers Perdus presents the world premier of Mark Tipton’s new score to the 1919 German Expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Tipton’s 74-minute score is written for an amplified sextet including trumpet with harmonizer, amplified cello with effects, synthesizer, electric guitar, bass, and drums.Musically, it draws from a wide range of genres, including twelve tone music, jazz, prog rock, pop and the avant-garde, bringing the film to life in all of its sinister glory. Mark Tipton studied composition with Richard Hoffmann (a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg) at Oberlin Conservatory and David Loeb at Mannes College of Music. He has written numerous full-length silent film scores, for Nosferatu, The Golem, Safety Last!, and A Trip to the Moon, amongst others. His orchestral composition, Cor Cordis, premiered by the Colby Symphony Orchestra in 2012.
