Project 35

PROJECT 35 – INDEPENDENT CURATORS INTERNATIONAL

Project 35 is a program of single-channel videos selected by 35 international curators who have each chosen one work from an artist that they think is important for audiences around the world to experience today. The resulting selection is released in four installments, and is presented simultaneously in an ever-expanding number of venues.

Drawing on ICI’s extensive network of curators to trace a complexity of regional and global connections among practitioners, Project 35 demonstrates the extent to which video is now one of the most important and far-reaching mediums for contemporary artists.

Project 35 recalls the founding initiatives of ICI. As a fledgling organization, ICI was an early proponent of video as an art form—the first ICI show in 1975 was organized for the São Paulo Biennial, presenting a survey of video works that included Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, Keith Sonnier, Steina Vasulka, Bill Viola, and others; artists who were pioneers working in a medium that was just beginning to gain traction in the field of contemporary art. Project 35 is produced and circulated by ICI (Independent Curators International), New York.
