Interrobang

SPACE Gallery presents a typography-based show, including works from five artists who collectively portray a range of conceptual possibilities and uses of type in visual art.

Megan O’Connell (Portland, ME) founded Dead Skin Press, which produces limited edition books, broadsides, and site-specific installations.  Presswork is in the collections of MoMA and the Walker Art Center, among others. Megan’s multi-faceted installations engage in the pleasurable practice of triggering linguistic associations and often encourage viewer participation.

John Salvest (Jonesboro, AR) teaches sculpture at Arkansas State University.  His work involving type and words stem from an interest to create a meaningful relationship between the physical objects and the word or phrase formed by them. Solo shows include: Phoenix Art Museum; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville, among others.

Sam Winston (London, UK) is a typographic artist whose experimental work blurs the boundaries between words and text and challenges traditional ways of how we use language.  In his sculptures, drawings, and books, he turns words into images, disassociating them from their literal meaning and exposing their potential as purely visual tools.  Sam’s work is in numerous special collections, including MoMA, Getty Research Institute, The Tate Galleries, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

David Wolfe (Portland, ME) runs Wolfe Editions, a letterpress print and composition studio, which he started over ten years ago.  His work is in the collections of the New York Public Library, Boston Public Library, Harvard’s Houghton Library, Portland Museum of Art, among many others.

Eric Yahnker (Los Angeles, CA) received a BFA in animation from CalArts and has worked on such TV shows as South Park, MADtv and Seinfeld. His work explores the absurd and humorous in familiar subjects, pulling from tabloid imagery, pop-culture icons, and taboo material.  Recent solo shows include: Jack the Pelican Presents, Brooklyn, NY; Kim Light Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Ambach & Rice, Seattle, WA.
