Micaela Blei, PhD, is a two-time Moth GrandSLAM winner and former Director of Education at storytelling nonprofit The Moth, where she co-founded the Education Program and grew it from a single high school pilot to a national resource for educators serving thousands of students annually. She has spent the last 12 years sharing her own stories, teaching storytelling and narrative performance, hosting storytelling shows, and coaching individual storytellers for the stage and beyond. Micaela has given invited keynotes about storytelling craft at organizations and conferences nationwide, from Lincoln Center Education’s award-winning Summer Institute to SXSW EDU, where she delivered the opening keynote in 2018. She earned her PhD in Education in 2018, focused on storytelling craft and education. She’s currently a visiting professor of Storytelling at Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine.
Micaela’s own stories can be heard on The Moth Radio Hour and podcast, Risk!, The Story Collider, Family Ghosts, WGBH’s Stories from the Stage, and in live shows across the city and nationwide. Her solo storytelling show, The Secret Life of Your Third Grade Teacher, was a sold-out FringeFAVE at the 2016 NYC International Fringe Festival and is currently in development as an Audible Original.
ABOUT SALT
The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies at MECA&D teaches students from all over the United States and around the world to become skilled documentarians and storytellers. Our faculty members are working documentarians and teaching professionals who help provide a strong foundation for students to develop new skills, build expertise, and make their best work.
Salt is committed to training storytellers to tell stories in a way that is equitable and inclusive. We also recognize that documentary has all too often reinforced the inequality present in our societies, rather than challenging it—and as part of our mission as storytellers and citizens, we are committed to transforming this field so that it reflects and amplifies a diversity of experiences, identities, and voices.
