WHAT CHEER? BRIGADE
9:00 PM
WITH BIRTHING HIPS AND HI TIGER
One of our all-time favorite bands What Cheer? Brigade returns to SPACE in celebration of our 15th anniversary week. The Providence-based 19-piece radical brass band has brought their music to city streets, American Legions, tiny dance clubs, parking lots, and island ferries… and that’s just in the state of Maine! Mixing the sounds of Bollywood, the Balkans, New Orleans, samba and hip-hop with punk intensity and classical precision, they prove that great parties need no electricity. Since 2005, they’ve shared the stage and collaborated with a who’s who of the music world: Blondie, Dan Deacon, Man Man, Japanther, Dengue Fever, Okkervil River, Lightning Bolt, Wolf Parade, Matt and Kim, Slavic Soul Party, Sage Francis, and Chain and the Gang, to name a few. Requiring no amplification, their live shows defy boundaries—literally. Last summer’s set ended in the streets…
Offering Support and making their Maine debut is Birthing Hips, the powerful Boston 4-piece melding out-pop, avant-rock, free-jazz sensibilities, and post-punk.
Opening the evening is Hi Tiger, the technicolor, synaesthetic performance project of Portland’s Derek Jackson. Equal parts glowing beats, crooning vocals, sinuous movements, divine lighting, unrepentant fierceness, and futurist melodrama, Hi Tiger is a living, breathing entity of sheer power and dramatic intimacy.
