POPSCAPES

Toledo, Ohio based artist Natalie Lanese combines collage and pop patterns to set up narratives that address, oftentimes humorously, the more serious realities of American culture. In the tradition of collage, the work makes a succinct and immediate argument about perception and the physical materials that surround everyday existence. On a massive scale, the patterns transform into geometric landscapes in which the collaged elements create conceptual spaces and immediate psychological realities that confront ideas of image vs. reality, depth, and depthlessness. Her colorful, large scale mural in SPACE’s main gallery will bring these ideas into focus creating a dynamic pop landscape directly on the walls.
