Diane Cluck, South China, Diva Cup
8:00PM
Diane Cluck is a singer-songwriter of intuitive folk music. Her vocal style has been noted for its distinctly clipped, glottal beauty, described as “an unlikely mix of Aaron Neville, the Baka people, and Joni Mitchell…unaffected yet unusual.” Diane contributed to New York’s burgeoning Antifolk scene in the early 2000s alongside artists such as Jeffrey Lewis, Adam Green, and Kimya Dawson. She’s traded harmonies and toured with CocoRosie and shared stages with a wonderful diversity of artists including The National, Regina Spektor, Yoko Ono, John Zorn, My Brightest Diamond, Devendra Banhart, Josephine Foster, Cass McCombs, and Daniel Johnston. Musicians such as Laura Marling, Florence Welch (of Florence And The Machine), and Sharon Van Etten have all cited Diane’s work as influential.
Joining her with Portland chamber folk duo South China making an all-too rare appearance on the SPACE stage. Opening the evening is one of most electrifying and fully-formed bands to hit the Portland scene in sometime, avant-pop trio Diva Cup, led by Cassandra McDermott with backing by members of Butcher Boy.
“Diane Cluck is a virtuosic talent with an emotionality that feels at once ancient and alien. Her mastery of her voice as an ecstatic instrument is so compelling.” –Antony Hegarty (of Antony & The Johnsons)
“When Diane sings, I am lost in a realm of infinite possibilities. She breaks me down, she gives me chills, she makes me cry–this is when I love music. “ –Bianca Casady (of CocoRosie)
“She made me rethink my singing instincts. Diane is not just an amazing and interesting singer, she’s a philosopher.” –Sharon Van Etten
“She takes the voice to the brink of a new and beautiful language.” –Chris Taylor (of Grizzly Bear)
