Cate Marvin’s Event Horizon Book Launch
7 PM - 8:30 PM
RSVP highly encouraged
Please join Maine Writers & Publisher Alliance and SPACE as we help launch Cate Marvin’s fourth book, Event Horizon, which is being released by Copper Canyon Press. Marvin will be joined in conversation by award-winning writer Bill Roorbach, and award-winning poets Myronn Hardy and Betsy Sholl will also share their poems. Poet Colin Cheney will provide music, and Kelly’s Books to Go will sell books.
Event Horizon brings together poems that contemplate the everyday―errands, gardening, dog walks―or confront the white-body supremacy of local sunbathers. Marvin reckons with the hurt of our patriarchal world, facing her own past, toxic relationships and pondering what we can gain by leaving some loved-ones behind.
The poet Terrance Hayes writes, “Sometimes Cate Marvin seems to be speaking directly to me: a poet who loves the language she loves. Her poems are made of sentient sentences. She channels the intensities of a present woman. Present being equal to nowness, witness, existence. This is simply a stunning collection.”
Cate Marvin earned an MFA in poetry from the University of Houston and an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop before completing a PhD in English and comparative literature at the University of Cincinnati. Marvin’s first book, World’s Tallest Disaster earned the Kate Tufts Discovery Award. A Guggenheim Fellow and co-founder of VIDA: Women in Literary Arts, Marvin is Professor of English at the College of Staten Island and also teaches poetry in the Stonecoast MFA Program at the University of Southern Maine. She lives in Scarborough, Maine.
