How do you survive the end of the world? The young people in this exceptional found-footage film discuss their plans and expectations in a series of online videos. Some of them think they can survive, others embrace the end. Sometimes parody, sometimes scarily real.

The end of the world was a hot topic online in 2012. Hoax_canular is a contemporary found-footage film that counts down the end of the world and consists of teenagers’ online videos dealing with the impending end. They believe they can survive as long as they have the right survival equipment – weapons, food and medicine. At the same time, the film reflects on how contemporary media deal with our fears and how we deal with those media. For the young people in Hoax_canular, the videos are a means of preparing for an uncertain future. Dominic Gagnon’s film expands the boundaries of traditional documentary and lends new meaning to online sharing; we never know when the parody ends and things get serious.

In person: filmmaker Dominic Gagnon.  Dominic Gagnon is an inventor, director, installer and active performer. He considers cinema as a technique for measuring the immeasurable or as a discipline of chaos. Since 1996, he has made public presentations of moving images, has invented machines and concepts, performs sound works, built facilities and creates performances in various galleries, festivals and biennials around the world. To carry out his projects, Gagnon has conducted research about the decline of economies, terror, violence and identity crisis among boys, the international adoption systems, information disorder and homelessness, Sado-Masochism and fetishism in popular culture and the family in the era of mega-entertainment.
