Join us August 19th at SPACE for a special evening with renowned arts writer Jarrett Earnest presenting his newly released book, Dana Schutz: Jupiter’s Lottery, about the artist’s latest paintings and sculptures.

This highly anticipated book is an experiment in arts writing and offers a deep dive into Schutz’s compelling and provocative work. Schutz’s art engages with subjects from imagined historical events to contemporary social anxieties, all rendered with unmistakable energy. Earnest’s monograph not only chronicles Schutz’s process, but also offers a fascinating reflection on the interconnections between her painting and recent engagement with sculpture, alongside insightful reflections on arts writing itself.

Earnest is a renowned voice in contemporary art, a 2021 Rabkin Prize winner, and author of What it Means to Write About Art: Interviews with Art Critics (2018) and The Young and Evil: Queer Modernism in New York, 1930-1955 (2020). He has also curated significant exhibitions, including Closer as Love: Polaroids 1993-2007: Breyer P-Orridge and Ray Johnson: WHAT A DUMP. His writing has appeared in numerous international publications and books on artists such as Willi Smith, Tabboo!, and Tim Whiten. Earnest also hosts the contemporary arts podcast, Angelic Transmissions, on East Village Radio.

Following the reading, local artist and curator Reed McLean of Lights Out Gallery will join Earnest in conversation and take questions from the audience. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to purchase copies of the book and several other art books thanks to Dunes art space.

A 7 p.m. reception at Dunes will follow the reading and all are welcome to attend.

This event is a collaboration between The Rabkin Foundation, SPACE, Dunes, and historic Mechanics’ Hall, all in Portland’s Arts District.
