Luan Sherman

Info
Thursday, March 29 2018
6:00 PM TO 8:00 PM

Sherman will explore access, identity, and place, through a queer lens in the context of contemporary politics and self-care practices. Sherman will unpack and examine how queer modality has shaped a broader sense of self, access to resources and privacy, and approach to self-care and intimacy.

The workshop will include group discussion about access, identity, and place. Participants will engage in interactive exercises that use a queer lens to explore documentation, capacity, and body regulation. Zines will be given out that cover the process of changing personal documentation, designed for use in any step of the process.

This workshop is designed for LGBTQIA identifying people and all participants should be mindful of their use of language and respect for difference and personal boundaries.

Luan Joy Sherman is a queer, trans masc artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. He works with video, embroidery, photography, sculpture, performance, and sound to explore trans identity, queer bodies, autoethnography, and self-care. He has attended residencies at ACRE, Black Mountain School, and The Chautauqua School of Art. He has been a faculty member at the School of The Alternative in Black Mountain, NC for the past two years. There he taught a self-designed course called “Queering Masculinity” and “How to Not Know,” a class structured like a living-document-workshop with an emphasis on curiosity and compassion, in order to cultivate challenging and generative conversation about identity, advocacy, and difference. In 2016 he taught a course on queer theory and intersectionality for an experimental education initiative in Brooklyn, NY called “Sundae School”. Last fall, his film, “ARTS ACTION AGAINST HB2” was shown at Anthology Film Archives for their Trans Film Series. His work can also be seen in print in the most recent issue of Unvarnished Mag, Issue 1: “LIBERATION”.
