2015 marks 50 years since Michael Hurley released his first record on Folkways Records, First Songs, recorded on the same reel-to-reel that taped Lead Belly’s Last Sessions. In the time since, he’s released albums on Warner Brothers and Rounder, collaborated with the Holy Modal Rounders, published comics, and had his music covered by Cat Power, Violent Femmes, Deer Tick, Vetiver, and Yo La Tengo. At 73 years old, Michael is still as active as ever, playing regularly in his home of Portland, Oregon, touring the country and releasing new and archival material through Mississippi Records.

Michael Hurley will be joined by Maine’s own enigmatic songsmith, Asa Irons. His latest record, Knife Gift Debt was recorded in South Portland with Caleb Mulkerin (Big Blood, Cerebrus Shoal, Fire on Fire) and features contributions from Tom Kovacevic, Micah Blue Smaldone, Janane Tripp, and Big Blood.

Reflecting on the past 15+ months of pandemic, SPACE wants to highlight the amazing recipients of our 2020 Maine Visual Artist Emergency Relief Grants and Maine Musician Relief Grants. Explore these lists to learn more about the wellspring of artists and creative thought leaders in our state.
