Join the MWPA to celebrate Douglas W. Milliken’s One Thousand Owls Behind Your Chest, the new collection by the winner of the 2016 Maine Literary Award for Short Works Fiction. Milliken’s reading will be backed by Dirty Projector’s bassist Nat Baldwin.

In Pushcart Prize-winning author Douglas W. Milliken’s One Thousand Owls Behind Your Chest, a trans youth seeking mythic answers from a corpse; an autistic boy combing a collective farm for his sister; a homeless man yearning for anyone to protect. From a normalized dystopian future to the ever-impossible now, the collections searches the borderland where the terror of human confusion confronts the babbling chaos of the Nature Without, where alienation fingers the braille surface of connection, where violence digs its nails into compassion.

Douglas W. Milliken is the author of the novel To Sleep as Animals and several chapbooks, most recently the pocket-sized collection Cream River. His stories have been honored by the Maine Literary Awards, the Pushcart Prize anthology, and Glimmer Train Stories, and have been published in Slice, the Collagist, and the Believer, among others.
