Join us on Earth Day for a special panel celebrating new books by environmental writers Cara Giaimo and Brandon Keim, moderated by science journalist Laura Poppick and spun into a party by Boston-based art-pop-rock band sidebody!
Co-presented by Print: A Bookstore and Maine Coast Heritage Trust.

Cara Giaimo lives in Somerville, MA, with her wife, Lilia, two cats, many plants, and uncountable neighborhood rats. A former staff writer at Atlas Obscura, Cara now covers our fellow species for the New York Times, Nautilus, and elsewhere. She plays guitar in sidebody.
Part field guide, part travelogue, part cabinet of curiosities, Cara Giaimo and Joshua Foer’s Atlas Obscura: Wild Life is the definitive traveler’s guide to the world’s most fascinating, unusual, and least-understood flora and fauna.

Brandon Keim is a science journalist specializing in nature and animals. His latest book, Meet the Neighbors: Animal Minds and Life in a More-Than-Human World (W.W. Norton), is about animal personhood and our relationships to wild animals and to nature. His work has appeared in publications including the New York Times, The Atlantic, WIRED, and Nautilus.

Laura Poppick is a Portland-based science and environmental journalist whose stories have appeared in the New York Times, Scientific American, National Geographic, and elsewhere. Her debut book, Strata: Stories from Deep Time (W.W. Norton, July 2025), is coming out July 2025.
At the start of the pandemic, three high school friends, Hava, Martha, and Lena, found themselves together again in their moms’ garages in suburbia. They picked up instruments they didn’t know how to play, and shared moments became songs. Soon after, Hava stumbled upon a fourth friend in a basement in Somerville — Cara, playing the vibraphone — and sidebody was born.

The band gained local traction through their raucously intimate live shows, drawing hundreds at Somerville Porchfest, opening for Maggie Rogers at the Paradise Rock Club, playing at the Institute of Contemporary Art, headlining the reopening of Cambridge’s Cantab Lounge, and premiering songs on 88.1 WMBR and 92.5 The River. Members often switch instruments and write songs onstage, speaking to each other with the spark and stumble of newness and fluidity of years.
They are known for their electric high-energy performances, four part harmonies, and unique DIY pop-art-rock sound, and have been compared to Talking Heads, the B-52s, and The Raincoats. sidebody released their first record, sidebody, in August 2022. Their second record, full time job, was released in May 2024. They are slated to play Boston Calling music festival in May 2025.
sidebody is Hava Horowitz, Lena Warnke, Martha Schnee and Cara Giaimo.
