THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM, TOUGH LOVE, SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO

PortFringe is a annual unjuried annual theater festival in Portland.  This year’s festival will feature over 100 shows over five days in five venues throughout Portland.  SPACE is proud to be a host venue again this year.  (More information about PortFringe below the show listings).  Wednesday’s shows are:

The Elephant in the Room @ 6:00:  The Elephant in the Room satirizes the legal and illegal animal cruelty that permeates American culture. Through a series of vignettes, the play explores the cosmetic testing industry, reveals the harshness of the greatest show on Earth, and takes the audience through the dark tunnel that is factory farming. The Elephant in the Room allows one to experience the world of animal exploitation from an entirely different perspective than what is often presented by animal rights organizations.

Tough Love @ 8:00: A gypsy vagabond journeys across the continent and lands in Hawaii to find her Guru. “Tough Love” is a multi-media immersive performance experience that tells the tale of Eun Mohawk Manini (little bird). The story highlights the trials of humility and the triumphs of truth and enlightenment through dynamic vignettes of dance, mantra, film, and ukelele. www.artyogacat.com for tour information

Sexual Perversity in Chicago @ 10:00: Sexual Perversity in Chicago explores the relationships of two men and two women in the late 1970s. Written in the jargon of Chicago’s working class, Mamet’s play focuses almost exclusively on dialogue (often vulgar). The play presents intimate, volatile scenes from these relationships, often including bitter arguments.

More about PortFringe in their own words:

We are PortFringe! We support new, edgy, and experimental theater in our city of Portland. We celebrate the imaginative and the weird. We seek to eliminate financial and logistical barriers so that artists can focus on their work (and maybe even make money doing so). We celebrate and contribute to Maine’s vibrant performance art community. We do this out of love and passion – for theater, for creativity, for cardboard props, and packed houses. Plus, it’s super fun.

The mission of PortFringe is to support theater and performance artists, to encourage experimentation and innovation, and to provide an accessible, affordable outlet for exciting work that enriches our creative community.

You get what you deserve! We’ve added a second screening of Vera Drew’s riotous film The People’s Joker on Sunday, April 21st at 7 pm. Grab tickets now! Saturday’s screening SOLD OUT!
