The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with live score by Mark Tipton’s Les Sorciers Perdus

Les Sorciers Perdus presents the world premier of Mark Tipton’s new score to the 1919 German Expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Commonly referred as the first true horror film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari revolutionized set design, introduced the ‘twist ending’ and has influenced generations of filmmakers from Stanley Kubrick to Tim Burton. Tipton’s 74-minute score is written for an amplified sextet including trumpet with harmonizer, amplified cello with effects, synthesizer, electric guitar, bass, and drums.Musically, it draws from a wide range of genres, including twelve tone music, jazz, prog rock, pop and the avant-garde, bringing the film to life in all of its sinister glory.  Mark Tipton studied composition with Richard Hoffmann (a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg) at Oberlin Conservatory and David Loeb at Mannes College of Music.  He has written numerous full-length silent film scores, for Nosferatu, The Golem, Safety Last!, and A Trip to the Moon, amongst others.  His orchestral composition, Cor Cordis, premiered by the Colby Symphony Orchestra in 2012. As a jazz trumpeter he has performed with Patti Austin, Ray Barretto, Vassar Clements, Peter Erskine, Quincy Jones, Christian McBride, Bobby McFerrin, Maria Schneider, and Tom Scott.  As a classical trumpeter he has worked with Yves Abel, JoAnn Falletta, Frederick Fennell, Vincent Mendoza, Bright Sheng, and John Williams.  He has performed at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, Germany, Burning-Man Festival in Black Rock City, Nevada, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the Getty Center (LA). He is currently Executive Director of the Portland Conservatory of Music, and he teaches trumpet lessons at PCM and at Bowdoin College.
