A passion for exploration comes naturally to Xylouris White, the ruggedly visionary duo formed of Cretan lute player George Xylouris and Australian drummer Jim White. For their debut album, 2014’s Goats, Xylouris White compared themselves to the titular animals, wandering fearlessly through rough-hewn terrain. Two years later, they showed how far their horizons could reach on 2016’s majestically expansive Black Peak, named after a mountain top in Crete. They’ve since released two widely acclaimed records for renowned curator of left-field sounds, Drag City, 2019’s The Sisypheans and the brand new The Forest In Me. All five of their studio records have been produced by their close collaborator Guy Picciotto, famed guitarist for Fugazi.
George and Jim first met in Melbourne, come from different musical backgrounds, and yet have much in common. George comes from a lively folk music tradition in Crete and Jim, now based in New York has been playing in his own unmistakable style for decades with Venom P. Stinger, Dirty Three, PJ Harvey, Cat Power, Bill Callahan, and Marisa Anderson to name a few.
