GET READY WEEKLY

Info
Apr 10, 2017 – May 1, 2017

GET READY WEEKLY (GRW), Portland’s platform for visual resistance production, will be in residence at SPACE Gallery from April 10th through May 1, 2017. In collaboration with local artists, activist groups, and non-profits, GRW will host weekly workshops for artists and non-artists alike to prepare for marches and actions that advance racial, social, environmental, and economic justice through dynamic and creative projects.  Everyone is welcome–workshops are free and snacks will be provided. They will take place at SPACE Gallery every Monday from 5:30 – 7:00pm. GRW’s partners include: ACLU of Maine, Artist Rapid Response TeamPortland Global Shapers Hub, League of Women Doers, Maine Conservation Voters350 MaineMaine Resists!Pickwick Independent PressSuit Up Maine, and More!

During these workshops, artists will lead participants in collectively making powerful visual statements for the following political actions:

APRIL 10 – TAX MARCH COLOR GUARD

Join the League of Women Doers’ Color Guard! In this workshop we will make flags and learn simple synchronized steps and chants in preparation for the Portland Tax March.

APRIL 17 – ART BUILD with members of ARRT!

Join Artists’ Rapid Response Team (ARRT!) for an ART BUILD in preparation for the People’s Climate March in Maine and Washington, D.C.

APRIL 24 – Make waves at the PEOPLE’S CLIMATE MARCH! Rise up against rising sea levels!

In preparation for the People’s Climate March, join the members of Portland Global Shapers Hub in making props and signs to represent sea level rise accelerated by global warming.

MAY 1 – INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’ DAY postcard writing campaign

In celebration of International Workers’ Day/May Day, join us for an evening celebrating and advocating for workers’ rights with Pickwick Independent Press.

GRW will bring all of the work made in the above workshops to the marches and anyone who would like to participate in carrying, wearing, and waving the work can join us!

Additionally, SPACE Gallery will serve as a place to collect, reflect, and acknowledge the ongoing resistance efforts in Portland by building a living archive that displays protest signs, ephemera, and other documentation of activism in our community. The gallery will be used to document the visual resistance production happening during the workshops with the installation growing over the course of the residency.  Community members will be invited to contribute to the archive, sharing their resistance experience and inspiration for continuing efforts.

GET READY WEEKLY is a platform for visual resistance production during the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency. During weekly workshops and events, artists and non-artists alike prepare for marches, rallies, and direct actions that advance racial, social, environmental, and economic justice through dynamic and creative projects. GRW is organized by Erin Johnson and Marieke Van Der Steenhoven.

Erin Johnson received an MFA and Certificate in New Media from the University of California, Berkeley in 2013 and is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Visual Arts at Bowdoin College.

Marieke Van Der Steenhoven is an educator and choreographer. She is the Special Collections Education and Outreach Librarian at Bowdoin College’s George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives.
