Artist Statement
The green flash is an optical phenomenon that you can see shortly after sunset or before sunrise. It happens when the sun is almost entirely below the horizon, with the barest edge of the sun – the upper edge – still visible. For a second or two, that upper rim of the sun will appear green in color.

What does a light phenomenon have to do with queerness and gender? What are the parallels in moments that are in nature and what is momentary nature in a body?

Mai Snow is a painter. Snow was born in Perm, Russia and moved to America at the age of 13. Currently, they are splitting their time between Austin, Texas and Portland, Maine. Snow received their MFA from University of Texas at Austin in 2020. Snow’s work celebrates the complexities of queer sexuality, gender, and the non-binary body. They deeply care about language and its ability to shape time, physicality, and openness. Snow has shown their paintings throughout New England, mostly Maine, and in various parts of the Midwest.
