In the Gallery
SPACE is pleased to present Here/Now, a video project by Maine-based Alyssa Freitas on view in the gallery from Wednesday, November 1 through Saturday, January 6.
Here/Now is a series of videos that focus on how one can find comfort through synthetic materials and mediation. The series explores anxieties brought on by social media and the YouTube subculture called ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) that emerged to rebuke the negative effects of social media fatigue. The practice works by “triggering” these euphoric responses by simulating physically close interactions and relaxing landscape imagery.
Alyssa Freitas is a transdisciplinary artist born in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and currently lives in Portland, Maine. She has received a Bachelors of Fine Art in Sculpture at Maine College of Art in 2016. Her construction of spaces explores the influx of digital culture into contemporary life. This unique outlook on hybridized form was further explored while she was a studio assistant for professional artist Rollin Leonard in 2015. Alyssa plans on earning a Master of Fine Art in interdisciplinary studies in California.
