Leon Benn and Seth Gass’ installation in SPACE’s main space is centered around the ethos and mystique of the dive bar, with the space transformed by elements and motifs commonly found in those watering holes. This work sparks a dialogue about the role of the dive bar in contemporary culture, and the parallel popular interest in places like these which provide a nostalgic representation of a heroic, idealized America. At the same time, this installation situates itself in the greater trajectory of kitsch, pop, and decorative art. The artists hope that the installation serves as both a critique of and an exaltation to the stigmas and associations surrounding dive bar culture.
