THE SPEED OF GESTALT

Gestalt is a theory of perception which describes how people tend to organize visual elements into unified wholes.
 

The Speed of Gestalt is an exploration into this concept for Maine based installation artist Amy Jorgensen. Allowing the location of SPACE’s storefront window on busy Congress St, and the flood of passersby to become moving parts in this otherwise static installation, Amy plays with people’s perception of what they see. This site-specific text-based installation creates the moment of “ah ha” which only occurs when the entire work is perceived as a unified whole. Visible only from a particular perspective, the message she sends might shed light on how we, ourselves, might start to feel like a unified whole as well.
