WHOOP DEE DOO

INFO
Sep 26, 2015 – Nov 7, 2015
In the Gallery

Whoop Dee Doo is a traveling, artist-led project and non-profit organization that creates ambitious installations and live performances internationally, generally through universities, festivals, arts organizations, and museums. Each project and accompanying programming are uniquely crafted to fit the needs of the organizations with which they partner, engaging their immediate communities. They work closely with underserved youth groups to research, conceive and create their projects. Their process emphasizes collaboration, encourages respect for diversity, and seeks to initiate a cross-generational and cross-cultural dialogue.

For this Portland, Maine project at SPACE Gallery, Whoop Dee Doo brought together six visiting artists to Portland to work with the Boys and Girls Club, metal band Eastern Spell, accordian band Maine Squeeze, and girls choir Musica de Filia to create an immersive installation and accompanying performance, twice on Saturday, September 26th.

Whoop Dee Doo has created commissioned projects for organizations including Abrons Arts Center (New York, NY), the Smart Museum (Chicago), Loyal Gallery (Sweden), the Time-Based Arts Festival/Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (Portland, OR), POP & DHC/ART (Montreal, QC), the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (Philadelphia, PA), The Contemporary (Baltimore, MD), and others. Whoop Dee Doo is the subject of a recent documentary film by Art21: New York Close Up, and has received a United States Presidential Teaching Award, presented by Barack Obama in 2013.
