SPACE is seeking collaborative and thoughtful individuals who are eager to serve greater Portland and Maine’s cultural landscape through specialized volunteerism at the board level or committee level of SPACE.
Use the form link above to tell us more about yourself and put your name in for nomination. Our organization uses this community open call alongside an internal nomination process with our governance committee.
For 2023 we are trying to identify and onboard three new board members and would like to add additional volunteers to board committees. All nominations will be archived for 2024’s recruitment process.
Board members are charged with the strategic, fiduciary, and long-term governance goals of the nonprofit organization. Committees meet monthly (with some months off), quarterly, or ad-hoc depending on the committee and work on a specialized topic alongside SPACE’s staff.
SPACE’s current Board has specific recruitment needs for this cycle including individuals who can assist with:
- Development, fundraising and community network building
- Financial oversight, report building, and metrics
- Building / Facilities management, development, and/or architecture/design
- Special events
Additional expertise in these areas is desired:
- Contemporary arts, music, film and/or performance expertise
- Leadership or executive experience
- Bar / restaurant management, and nightlife leaders
Board Nomination Expectations
- We seek board members who are aligned with our recruitment priorities, organizational values, and strategic plan goals.
- We seek board members who bring one or more of the 3 T’s: Time, Talent, and/or Treasure (personal, in-kind, or foundational giving). Future nominees will provide a perspective that broadens our ability as a board to be stewards of SPACE. From a financial perspective, we expect all board members to prioritize SPACE in their giving or volunteerism/advocacy for fundraising.
- We hold an expectation for board members to ultimately hold board officer, executive committee, or committee chair roles.
- We seek board members who exhibit positive working styles (e.g. respectful of others, thoughtful, inquisitive, innovative, work with integrity, and value equity).
- We seek board members who will be advocates, champions, patrons, representatives, and active networkers for the organization as well as our staff and artists.
- We invite all board members to approach the board work and organization with a spirit of curiosity as we bring SPACE into the future.
- We expect board members to attend most if not all meetings annually and offsite strategy sessions, fundraisers, and house parties.
- Board meetings occur 10 times a year (currently on Wednesday evenings at 5:30pm). Committees meet monthly, quarterly, or on an ad-hoc basis depending on their committee needs as determined internally by the committee. Board members are expected to serve on or chair a committee as part of their work.
Committee work is a great way to try out board work with a lower time and workload commitment, and can be an introduction to future board consideration. As SPACE launches into its third decade, we believe this is an especially exciting time to join us in strengthening our organization to support Portland’s art and culture, statewide artists through our grant making initiatives, and the many innovative national artistic voices we invite to our home in downtown Portland.
Thank you for your potential interest or sharing this with members of the community who can help strengthen SPACE for the betterment of the audiences, artists, and staff we work with. The online nomination form can be found here. Please submit your nomination by Wednesday, July 12th at 5:00pm.
