After missing a few great shows at SPACE over the last couple of weeks, I made sure not to miss the Russian-themed extravaganza this Saturday.

After missing a few great shows at SPACE over the last couple of weeks, I made sure not to miss the Russian-themed extravaganza this Saturday.

NYC’s Alina Simone was in town on tour in support of her album Everybody Is Crying Out To Me, Beware She performed that all-Russian covers of music by folk/punk cult icon Yanka Dyagileva before concluding the set with a new original song of her own called “Beautiful Machine.”

Opener Matt Rock is well-known in Portland and his return got the night started with an appropriately celebratory vibe, courtesy of his accordion.

The middle act of the night, Adam Kurtz, melted faces with guitar solos over sweet pop songs, executed by a top-notch band of familiar faces from the local scene. The band played the new album, The Devil Is Defeated, all the way through. Rumor has it that video proof of their performance will surface some time soon.
