Hand Painted, Hand Stitched Audubon Birds

In this class, young artists (ages 5-10) will create detailed muslin bird paintings to hand-stitch into beautiful, life-size, painted stuffed animals. Children will discover the ideas and artwork of John James Audubon through storytelling, guessing games and funny old myths about bird habits and migration. After getting excited about bird lore and admiring some detailed renderings by Audubon himself, participants will observe a real taxidermied yellow-shafted flicker! We will notice its shapes, patterns and colors, and learn to draw and paint birds from life. The kids will work to thoughtfully create their own palette and experiment with mixing color. We will then use machine and hand-stitching techniques to sew our work into a beautiful and functional stuffed bird sculpture to bring home!
Taught by Kate Hargrave, this workshop is structured for individual attention and instruction and is designed to develop observation skills, build knowledge of art history, gain confidence in using certain tools and materials and most of all foster a love for the wonderful process of making art.
* Please bring a bagged lunch or a snack. Parents are welcome to stay through the workshop.
