In a just over a week Portland will bid farewell to David Meiklejohn. David’s has been consistently creating and facilitating art & culture (not to mention providing an endless wellspring of old fashioned love) for over a decade. In addition to his own film projects (including a handful in collaboration with SPACE) David has been the nucleus of the filmmaking community in Portland, his energy and enthusiasm for every conceivable kind of project or idea from every kind of person is contagious, it draws people together and helps inspire confidence for creators to take their creations seriously. That conviction to create new things and collaborate with new people is what really makes his departure sting. It’s overwhelming (and frankly impossible) to attempt to sum up or quantify how much David has contributed to our beloved city (and we won’t try) but it’s undeniable that our art & culture community is a more vibrant place creating new combinations of art & culture due in part to David’s enormous output of work/collaboration, and espically due to how generous David has been with his time + skills. Plus we haven’t even mentioned his unwavering support + activism on numerous social justice issues. If you see Mr. Meiklejohn in the next few days give him a hug and wish him well. Thanks David! We know you will kick ass in LA, just remember to come home once in a while, too much nice weather can warp a person. We Love You!
